Previous Chiropractic Thoughts:

A case study published on July 17, 2014, in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health documented chiropractic care helping a 9-year-old girl who was suffering from chronic ear infections, neck pain, and headaches. The case study reported that the little girl was scheduled to have tympanostomy tubes placed in her ears in three weeks. Her problem had left her with approximately 60% hearing loss in her left ear and 30% hearing loss in her right ear. In the four months prior to being brought to the chiropractor, the girl was treated with antibiotics for her ear infections five times. In three of those episodes, her tympanic membranes had burst. In addition to the ear problems, she was suffering from neck pain and occasional but severe headaches.

The results of the chiropractic care were immediate and profound. The study records that over the first three weeks of chiropractic care, the girl did not experience a single headache. After three weeks of chiropractic care, the girl was brought to an otolaryngologist for a re-evaluation where it was found that the girl's hearing level had returned to 95% of normal. As a result of these profound improvements, the tympanostomy tubes surgery was considered unnecessary, and the procedure was cancelled.

"Numerous studies have identified positive outcomes in otitis media with chiropractic care based on the detection and removal of spinal subluxations," the authors wrote in their conclusion. "This case study demonstrated a total remission of chronic ear infections in a girl under chiropractic care."

If you have a yard, you have been working in it. Gardening, raking, digging, lifting and mowing are all common yard activities. Not to mention other things like powerwashing, painting and moving outdoor furniture. All of these activities can cause undue stress to the body. If there is too much stress, the brain is overwhelmed in processing and subluxation occurs. This could manifest into symptoms such as back aches, back pain, restriction of movement and muscle spasms. Time for a chiropractic adjustment to turn on the power of your brain and nerve system. More importantly, don’t wait until you hurt your back. Preventative chiropractic care can keep you in the yard, working hard without the pain! Chiropractic first, health first.

I think I gave you enough chiropractic information, but I will add one last thought. Although it is very safe, some people are averse to the idea of cracking sounds when having their spine adjusted. Thankfully, many chiropractors, like myself use instrument adjusting techniques that eliminate the cracking sound of a traditional chiropractic spinal adjustment. No bending, twisting or cracking. Just a very gentle, “quiet” chiropractic spinal adjustment!! High tech and still high touch!

While chiropractic care is not a treatment for any disease or a replacement for necessary antibiotics, chiropractic care has been researched and proven to enhance immune system function. The body’s immune system is responsible for fighting infections and keeping the body healthy. Chiropractic care is an important part of maintaining a healthy body.

Spring has sprung and so has seasonal allergies. Chiropractic is of benefit to allergy sufferers for two reasons. 1. Regular chiropractic care improves immune system function. A strong immune system helps to combat allergic reactions. 2. Nerves in the upper neck control the function of the sinuses. If the sinuses are not working properly due to nerve interference, they cannot drain as well as they should and they will stay clogged. Chiropractic care improves nerve flow to the sinuses, thus helping allergy attacks.

As chiropractors, our job appears to the general public to be the care taker of an endless parade of neck pain and back pain conditions. Yet, once the surface of the chiropractic profession is “cracked” it is easy to see the much larger picture. The body functions under the control of the nervous system. The nervous system is responsible for the function of every cell, tissue, organ and system in the body. Therefore, the nervous system is responsible for your health. A chiropractor’s job, with each adjustment, improves the flow of your nervous system, allowing your body to work at the higher level that nature intended. The chiropractor’s most important job is helping your body to be healthier!!

Chiropractic Philosophy. In the Chiropractic profession Chiropractors have long known that “Life” within the human body is always functioning at full, one hundred percent, efficiency at all times to maintain a normal, healthy body that is capable of performing all the functions that are part of normal living. They know failure in a bodily function or abnormality in an organ is often found in a dysfunction of nerve flow. Chiropractic analysis can locate areas of nerve flow dusruption and their correction results in the return to normal function of that “Life” force within the body.

~ Dr. Sanford Black

Spinal bones that are NOT in proper alignment cause friction on the spinal joints. This leads to wear and tear (arthritis). Spinal adjustments improve the spinal alignment and reduce friction on the joints, preventing wear and tear (arthritis).

Chiropractic Spinal adjustments are akin to receiving a flu shot and may one day be considered to be the best preventative treatment for the flu. Research shows that spinal adjustments improve the rate at which DNA repairs itself, increased white blood cell production and enlarged markers for resistance enzymes. These are all important values for immune system function and greater health.

In this flu and virus season, one of the most important things you can do is to keep your immune system functioning properly at a high level. You can do this by making sure you are eating (or drinking) your vegetables every day, getting a enough rest, drinking plenty of water, taking your vitamins (especially D3) and having your spine checked chiropractically for nerve interference. The nervous system controls how your immune system operates. If there is spinal nerve stress, the immune system does not work as well as is should and you are not as healthy as you can be. Chiropractic adjustments remove nerve pressure along the spine and allows the immune system to function better.

Chiropractic offers a unique place in modern health care. On the one hand, it draws upon modern scientific knowledge and techniques. On the other hand, it utilizes the ancient concepts of self-healing, life energy and natural healing. Chiropractic teaches us that the best way to improve our health is by removing the elements that interfere with normal body function. Along with spinal nerve pressure, these include drugs, unnatural foods, pollution, chemicals, excess tension and other forms of emotional distress.

"As I began preparation on a new article scheduled a few weeks from now about products still made in America, it occurred to me to also write about a health care profession that is an American original: Chiropractic. The profession of chiropractic originated in 1895 in Davenport, Iowa. I encountered chiropractic care as a patient in the early 1980s. I went to see a chiropractor in Nashville for a back injury. As he examined me, he said, “Tell me about your headaches.” Since I had not mentioned headaches in my history, I asked how he knew I had a problem with headaches. “When I examined the X-rays of your neck, I discovered several signs of previous injury that have affected your cervical spine. If you did not have headaches and neck pain I would be very surprised,” he replied. He showed me the areas where I had sustained damage to the joints in my neck apparently years previously. My parents had taken me to several medical doctors, but no reason was found for my headaches. As the chiropractor worked with me to resolve the back injury, the headaches disappeared too. I realized a few months later that I had not had a single headache since I began having chiropractic care for my neck. Considering that only months previously, I would literally be miserable for two or three days per week with head and neck pain, I was extremely pleased with my care."

~ Dr. Mark Kestner, Murfreesboro Post

Retired Brigadier General, Rebecca Halstead, diagnosed with chronic fibromyalgia after 27 years of service, was forced into an early retirement because of the pain and symptoms associated with the disease — such as fatigue, sleep deprivation, and depression. She went to numerous doctors and specialists to resolve the pain, but didn’t experience successful relief until she discovered chiropractic. “The doctor of chiropractic was the one place I could go and walk out feeling better,” said Halstead.

Today, Halstead receives tremendous relief from her chiropractor who provides routine adjustments, nutrition and supplement counseling. “Now I look at my old bottles of prescription drugs and think life is great and I don’t take one of them,” said Halstead.

"Not having chiropractic care in your life is like driving the car with the emergency brake on. It can be done and perhaps not even noticed, but once the brake is removed the car has more "energy" and performs better."

~ Reggie Gold, D.C.

Chiropractic care in pregnancy allows for safer and easier deliveries for both the mother and baby.

One of the biggest annual American surveys of its kind has found that users of chiropractic were highly satisfied with the outcomes of their care, unlike many other forms of complementary and alternative therapy. The annual questionnaire conducted by the U.S. Consumer Reports National Research Center surveyed 45,601 Consumer Reports subscribers online, and found that three out of four were using some form of alternative or complementary therapy for their general health. Chiropractic dominated the lists of helpful approaches for particular conditions, whereas other alternative treatments used for 12 common health problems were usually deemed far less helpful than prescription medicine.

"Many of us take better care of our automobiles than we do our own bodies… yet the auto has replaceable parts."

~ BJ Palmer, D.C.

As parents search for proactive lifestyle habits that will nurture their children’s health and family, chiropractic care is leading the way. Chiropractic awareness is shifting from being an intervention for pain relief toward a more proactive, wellness-oriented healthcare choice. Dr. Candice Pert, a recognized leader in the field of psychoneuroimmunology, credits chiropractic as having a “significant effect on maximizing immunity via maintenance of a healthy nervous system.”

~ Dr. Risa Sloves, D.C.

A lot of people ignore their health (symptoms) thinking that things will get better in time. Most say they hate going to doctors. Stop thinking of chiropractors as doctors. Yes, we are very capable doctors with extensive training in what we do, but it might help you to think of us more as a body mechanic. Instead of having to go to the "doctor," you have to go to the chiropractor for a "tune-up" to keep your body performing at it's best!!

Chiropractic care "unwinds" the nervous system and allows the free flow of energy throughout the body. At the same time, a chiropractor's spinal adjustment relieves the tension in the muscles attached to the spine. The perfect stress reducer!

Spinal adjustments are probably one of the best things you can give your body when under stress. Chiropractic care will loosen the knotted up muscles in your neck and shoulders, but more importantly, adjusting the spine will balance the flow of your nervous system, allowing your body to calm down and relax.

Chiropractic care on a regular basis accomplishes 3 things which leads to 1 great thing!

  • 1. Spinal adjustments balance musculature which loosens stiff and tight muscles, increasing mobility and decreasing pain.

  • 2. Spinal adjustments realign the spinal joints, reducing the friction on the bone caused by the malposition. This prevents further wear and tear which leads to arthritis.

  • 3. Spinal adjustments open up the spaces between the bones where the spinal nerve attaches from the spinal cord.

By freeing up these nerve channels, nerve flow to all of the body's vital parts and systems is improved. These 3 things lead to 1 great thing.... improved function, better performance, increased health!!

Subluxations, the misalignments of the spinal bones, are like the dimmer switches of the body. If you have a dimmer switch on your overhead light at home you can control the amount of light you have by moving the dimmer switch up or down. Open the switch up and you have more bright light. Close the switch down and you have less light and more darkness. Subluxations put pressure on the spinal nerves which decreases the flow of nerve energy to all of your important body parts and internal systems. The worse the subluxation, the greater the decrease in nerve impulse flow. Correct the subluxation with chiropractic spinal adjustments and the nerve channels open up and there is an increase in nerve energy to all of the body's parts and symptoms, which equals increased function and in turn better health. Just like moving a dimmer switch to full open!

The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease.

~ Thomas Edison

Regular chiropractic care leads to a decrease in medication usage. Balancing the spinal musculature decreases the need for pain pill, while enhancing nerve flow and improving the function and performance of the organs and systems in the body. A healthy body needs little to no medication.

Did you ever hear the rubber garden hose theory of chiropractic? Water flows through the hose akin to the way nerve impulses flow through the nerves. If you kink the hose, the water flow is disrupted. If the spinal bone is out of alignment, the nerve flow is disrupted. Unkink the hose and the water flows freely to your garden and lawn and everything is healthy. Align the spinal bone and the nerve energy flows freely to all the parts of your body and your body works better and has the chance to be healthier.

Chiropractic works!! Why do so few people use chiropractic care for their health? You are probably thinking, "Every time I go to the chiropractor their office is very busy, everyone must use chiropractic." Well, guess what? Only 30 % of the population have ever been to a chiropractor at least once. And only 18% of the population is currently under chiropractic care. That's not a lot of people.

I, for one, am amazed that so few people use chiropractic care considering that 90% of the people that come to my office tell me how much better they feel with chiropractic care then before they started. I guess people are afraid to try new things.

Maybe it is a fear of the unknown. Or it could be a wrong perception they have that was given to them by a friend or even their doctor (like "getting cracked" - that even sounds scary to me). All I know is that from what I see every day over a 34 year period, chiropractic care works and more people need to be seeing chiropractors for their health care needs.

Ever wonder who could benefit from chiropractic care? Babies? Toddlers? Children? Adults? Aging adults? How about all of the above. My front desk assistant, Pam, has always put it like this: “If you have a spine, you need to get it checked!” Although we are checking your spine—your spine protects your nerve system. Your nerve system controls every cell, tissue and organ in your body. When your spine is in line, your nerve system is free to function at its best, promoting good health and well being! So it seems that since everyone has a spine—then EVERYONE should be checked by a chiropractor. If you have questions, please ask me! I’d love to continue the conversation.

Spinal adjustments, as performed by doctors of chiropractic, improve a person's ability sustain prolonged make-out sessions. It is extremely important to have proper cervical alignment to optimize kissing sessions. You can't kiss long if your neck hurts!!!

Does chiropractic cure disease? NO. But the correction of vertebral subluxation (spinal misalignment) in dis-eased people leads to an improvement in nervous system function, and thus an improvement in body function and health.

~ Dr. J. Zimmerman, The Working Chiropractor's 4-Part Course, 2002

Unfortunately, as us regular exercisers know, periodically we strain a muscle or do a weird movement that puts our body out of synch. Thankfully, chiropractors are there to put Humpty Dumpty back together again. Whether a spinal bone is subluxated causing a back pain, or you tweaked your shoulder, hip or knee. Chiropractors will straighten you out so that you can exercise effectively each and every day.

In this world of chemicals, environmental toxins, drugs and processed foods, isn't it nice that there is something 100% natural like chiropractic to keep you healthy. Chiropractic care adds nothing to the body (like drugs), not does it take anything away (like surgery). Chiropractic care's natural approach to health is by removing spinal nerve stress with gentle adjustments to the spine allowing the body to perform better and be healthier by improving nerve flow to all the vital organs and systems in the body.

The last technique is chiropractic. The spinal adjustment strengthens the immune system in many ways. Research shows that spinal adjustments increase the rate that DNA repairs itself in the body. DNA repair is an important maker in immune system function. In addition, spinal adjustments, via serum lab studies, have shown to increase T-Cell production. T-cells are immune system cells that help the body fight infection. My favorite study shows that by having the upper back adjusted there was an immediate increase in white blood cell production. White blood cells are the cells that fight off infection. They are very important immune system cells. Lastly, people who are under regular chiropractic care have been shown to have higher levels of resistance enzymes. Resistance enzymes are the immune system enzymes that help the body to resist disease. Stay Healthy Tip #1 > Stay Healthy Tip #2

Ancient Egyptians and Greeks knew of the body’s continual striving to heal itself. During the Renaissance, learned men theorized of "vital forces" within the body that helped it resist disease. The "vital force" they spoke of is what chiropractors refer to as the body’s innate intelligence.

Chiropractic is based on a vitalistic philosophy that recognizes that there is an innate intelligence that uses the brain and nerve system to control and maintain the body in health. Interference to the nerve system can lead to a change in health most easily seen as disease or loss of function. But more than that, this interference can affect performance on multiple levels, some easily observed and others more subtle.

Chiropractic is the science of locating and correcting vertebral subluxations, slight misalignments in the spine that interfere with the nervous system, so that the body can heal itself. - See more.

There is a fundamental and important relationship between the spine and health, which is mediated through the nervous system. The spine–health relationship is the basis of chiropractic. This principle holds that the spine is not just a conglomeration of bone and muscle like the shoulder or the knee. Rather, it occupies a unique and privileged position in the makeup of the human body that, to the chiropractor, represents both a vulnerability to our health and a means of achieving optimal health.

~ Ralph Gay, MD, Craig Nelson, DC

Research shows that people who use chiropractic care regularly as part of their personal health care program (at least one time per month) show a statistical decrease in hospitalizations, out patient care, and most importantly drug use. As well as an increase in their quality of life. This makes chiropractic a truly affordable health care act!!

"A man too busy to take care of his health is like a mechanic too busy to take care of his tools.”

~ Spanish Proverb

Chiropractic Health Care is about prevention and maintenance. Maintaining the structure of the body, keeping pressure of of the nerves and balancing spinal musculature is an important aspect of preserving and maintaining health.

Headache, backaches, neck aches, leg aches, arm aches, breathing problems, digestive problems, ear infections, immune system problems. Of all the interesting cases that come into my office and all of the interesting cases that are helped with chiropractic care, my favorite cases are the wellness cases. My patients that come in month after month with zero symptoms who just want to stay healthy and use chiropractic as part of their preventative healthcare program.

It always amazes me that in this day and age I hear people say that they are afraid to go to the Chiropractor. Yet they think nothing of taking drugs and medications that may kill them. Drugs and medications are the third largest cause of death in our country. Every time you take a pill, you are gambling with your health. Take them over time and you are gambling with life and death. A Chiropractor's malpractice insurance is cheaper than his or her car insurance! Can any other medical practitioner say that? I think not. So, what is there to be scared of?

Why do you go to the chiropractor? Here are my personal 3 reasons why I visit my chiropractor for an adjustment every 1-2 weeks. 1. I know that each adjustment is helping my body to be healthier. My immune system and every other system in my body (and yours) is controlled by the nervous system. The adjustment improves the function of my nervous system, thus helping all my other systems work better and contribute to my overall health. 2. The adjustment helps me deal with muscular stress that I have placed on my body over the years. I move better and have less muscular discomfort with my chiropractic care. As a martial artist chiropractic adjustments help to keep me in my best form. I have better reaction time and more acute awareness. 3. I just feel better. I feel more relaxed and have more energy when I get adjusted regularly. I sleep better, I breathe better, I am happier. That's my 3 reasons. What are yours?

~ Dr. Ellie

Davenport, Iowa - The profession of chiropractic can be traced to an adjustment of a deaf man named Harvey Lillard by DD Palmer on September 18, 1895. Mr Lillard soon after regained his hearing and DD Palmer, after considerable reasoning, investigation, and refinement when on to found what has become one of the world's largest healing art and science. Palmer's discovery, that spinal structural imbalance can cause nerve flow interference (aka subluxation) interrupting homeostasis and function, was revolutionary.

Finally, people were to have a viable natural health care option from the conventional medical industry of pharmaceuticals and surgery. Chiropractic is now rendered world-wide, with a growing body of research verifying its principles, safety, and effectiveness.

Reflux and colic symptoms in infants showed a significant improvement within a 3 week period of chiropractic care.

~ Journal of Pediatric, Maternal and Family Health

Is there a reason why you don't visit a chiropractor regularly as part of your health care routine? Let me give you 3 reasons why everyone should be under chiropractic care. 1. Irritated spinal nerves from subluxated spinal bones affects every system, cell, tissue in the body and has a negative impact on health. 2. Spinal subluxations place friction on the spinal bones. Over time, this leads to permanent bone degeneration called arthritis. 3. Spinal subluxations cause muscular imbalance and instability. This makes a persons spine prone to injury, leading to aches, pains and discomforts. Do you want to hear the worst part? Subluxations can be a gradual process and cause no symptoms until the subluxation has been in the spine for a long period of time. The only way to know if you have a subluxation is through chiropractic examination. Be all you can be. Get to your chiropractor.

~ Dr. Jay Zimmerman

A motto used in chiropractic is "Above, Down, Inside, Out." Meaning life and health flows from above (brain), down (your spinal cord), inside (to all of your body parts) and out (expression of life and health). Chiropractic's holistic philosophy is that health comes from the inside of your body and expresses itself outward, while medicine has a more of an outside in philosophy. Meaning that health comes from the outside, via drugs and pills, thus outside in.

Concerned about getting the flu? Don't believe in or want a flu shot? Here is one way of preventing flu in the winter time (from Dr. J. Zimmerman). 1. Regular chiropractic adjustments help with the performance of the immune system. 2. Vitamin D3 every day (see above). 3. Multivitamin daily. 4. 1000-3000mg of vitamin C a day. 5. eat whole foods, limit sugar intake. 6. Drink plenty of water. 7. Feel yourself starting to get symptoms? Increase vitamin C to 9000 mg. daily divided by 3-4 doses, take oregano oil as directed on the bottle and supplement elderberry extract 2-3 times a day. This is nature's flu shot with no side effects and it actually works!!

Chiropractic, safe and effective health care for well over 113 years! The birthday of Chiropractic is this week, September 18. Chiropractic was discovered in the United States in 1895, but history documents ancient civilizations using spinal adjustments as a primary health care method. The Greek philosopher, Hippocrates even said, "look well to the spine for the cause of disease." Our own Thomas Edison once said, "The doctor of the future will use no medication, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet, exercise and the cause and prevention of disease."

Chiropractic aims to keep the body functioning optimally, which is important for looking and feeling healthy and beautiful. Beauty goes well beyond physical attributes like high cheekbones, notes Chiropractor, Dr.DeMann. “The best way to stay beautiful and youthful is to stay healthy,” he says. “Pick treatments that promote health. Stand up straight, lift your chin, look stronger, healthier, more fit and you will look more beautiful.”

Look to the spine for the cause of disease.

~ Hippocrates

Our country’s premature birth rate has risen by 36 percent in the last 25 years. That’s a serious cause for concern. Chiropractic can affect premature birth in a positive way. Regular chiropractic care for mom while pregnant can help her to extend pregnancy longer and closer to her due date. A chiropractor is trained to find pelvic posture issues on the pregnant mom and align it, relaxing uterine muscles and ligaments making the proper uterous shape for the growing baby to lie in comfortably. If baby lies in the proper position, we can be more confident a natural vaginal delivery can occur, without complication and less likely to start before mommy and baby are ready.

~ Daily News, Brechenridge, MN

Chiropractic is not a medical profession nor does it try to duplicate medical care. That being said, chiropractic is a drug free profession and our philosophy dictates that the use of drugs is harmful to the body in general and drugs should only be used when it is deemed necessary. So, naturally, our drug free stance places most chiropractors on the side of the fence that allows parents to make there own choices as to whether or not to vaccinate their children and not to be forced into some mandatory vaccine schedule because the government and the industry that profits from manufacturing the vaccine says so.

"Chiropractic care helps arthritis patients once again move their bodies with ease," said Dr. Bufano. "Regular adjustments maintain proper spinal alignment and reduce the severity of pain. This reduces a patient's reliance on medication for pain management and helps individuals maintain an active lifestyle. Dr. Bufano recommends patients with mild or moderate arthritis be active each day, whether patients take yoga class or go for a short swim. Regular activity keeps the joints lubricated, which helps to reduce inflammation and pain."

Chiropractic has always been a 100% natural and drug free approach to health care. Not only will it keep the body off of pain medications due to the aches and pains from everyday living, but research shows that chiropractic has a profound affect on the body's overall performance and immune system function which can help the body to be healthier and off of drugs!

Do you have forward head posture? Does your head seem to lean or jut forward from the front of your body? This lean is indicative of forward head posture. For every inch your head moves forward, the head gains 10 pounds in weight as far as the muscles in your upper back and neck are concerned, because they have to work much harder to keep the head (chin) from dropping forward onto your chest. The extra weight forces the muscles that raise the chin to remain in constant contraction, putting pressure on the 3 Suboccipital nerves. This nerve compression may cause headaches at the base of the skull, and may even mimic sinus headaches.

Chiropractic is the detection and correction of interference with the expression of this intelligence in relation to the spine called the subluxation process. The primary system for the expression of this innate intelligence is over our nerve system, and being that our spinal cord is surrounded and protected by spinal bones called vertebrae, this important relationship is how chiropractors became synonymous with backs. However, in truth chiropractic deals with the innate intelligence and the nerve system, and a chiropractor is not a doctor of the spine, especially not spinal disorders, decay nor disease. As a chiropractor the only conclusion that I can with any degree of certainty make is that your body is better off with a clear nerve system than one with interference. Chiropractors are trained and are the only practitioners who have the philosophy and the technique to find that interference and to assist in correcting it.

~ Dr. Lloyd Fielder, D.C.

In my opinion as a chiropractor, with over 33 years experience treating infants, children and adults, the most important benefit I have observed with the chiropractic service I provide is that regular chiropractic spinal adjustments help the immune system to perform better, keeping your body healthier then it would be without spinal care.

Chiropractic care provides treatment for the leading causes of disability and burden of disease, low back, and neck pain, which rank respectively as the number-one and number-four cause of disability worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. Injured workers whose initial healthcare provider was a surgeon underwent surgery 42.7 percent of the time, versus 1.5 percent when the provider was a DC, reported an article in Spine.

Here is another lesson in chiropractic philosophy, again it is deep stuff! Chiropractic KNOWS that Innate lives IN the body; it must flow from brain into and thru body; Innate KNOWS function, can perform function IF it can get from where it is in the brain to where it should express itself in the body. Chiropractor studies one living body as united mind and matter, soul and body, Innate and function. Chiropractic is a PHILOSOPHY of Innate, a SCIENCE of interference, and an ART of its correction, therefore it is more than any one because it is a union of all three.

I spend a lot of time on my health tips explaining the science behind chiropractic. That being said, the philosophy behind what chiropractors do is unique and is based on the following principles: (Hang onto your hat, this is deep stuff!)

There exists a Universal Intelligence which brings organization to all matter, and maintains its existence; All living things have inborn, or Innate Intelligence which adapts universal forces and matter for use in the body; Every living thing has ALL the Innate Intelligence it requires to maintain its life and optimal health; Health is the expression of the Innate Intelligence through Innate Matter, via Innate Energy; When there is interference with the transmission of Innate Energy, the result is a decrease in the expression of Innate Intelligence, which chiropractors call dis-ease (not to be confused with disease!).

The bottom line is that the body is self healing and self regulating and it has an inner intelligence that controls these functions. The inner intelligence (innate), is expressed through the nervous system. If the nervous system is not flowing properly, the innate intelligence cannot properly express itself and a lack of ease in the body occurs (dis-ease), which then can result in ill health. This is the philosophy of chiropractic and it is why chiropractors feel that our services are a valuable tool in the overall health of the human body.

There is a fourth thing to do to help the body age well. Continue with your regular chiropractic care. Spinal adjustments help the spinal bones to move properly which can help to prevent arthritis. Adjustments also balance the spinal musculature which keeps you moving better and more freely. Lastly, the affect spinal adjustments have on the nervous system is well documented and this will help your body to function better. Better function equals greater health.

One of the best things you can to for your spinal bone joints is to have regular chiropractic care. Spinal adjustments reduce the friction on the bones which can prevent accelerated degeneration (arthritis).

The idea behind chiropractic therapy is that proper function of the musculoskeletal system allows the rest of the body, particularly the nervous system, to function properly as well. When this happens, the body is able to heal itself, fight disease, and maintain optimal health.

~ Sean Redman, D.V.M.

The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease”

Thomas Edison

(Sounds like Chiropractic to me! FYI, a recent Snopes.com question asked if this quote was actually said by Thomas Edison. According to the fact finders, Edison regularly made predications and this quote was taken from him, directly, in 1903.)

Take a rubber band and wrap it snugly around your finger. What happens? Your finger starts to turn blue and mild discomfort starts to be felt under the rubber band. As time goes on, the finger becomes numb. Does your finger feel better with the rubber band on it or off it? Which way is healthier for your finger? If you had to treat this situation, would you take an aspirin to alleviate the symptoms? Have a deep tissue massage for pain relief? How about having your finger surgically operated on? None of those choices sound good.

How about take the rubber band off of your finger? That makes sense. Removing the rubber band corrects the cause of the problem, removes the interference and the finger starts to function normally again. This scenario I described is the description of chiropractic. If a spinal bone is out of place, putting pressure on your spinal nerves, don't take a drug for symptom relief or have an operation. Get a spinal adjustment, correcting the spinal alignment, taking the pressure off of the nerve. Makes sense to me.

It's not about a specific condition, it's about the nervous system. It cracks me up when I think of a conversation I had with a medical doctor. He said to me, "You chiropractors think you can cure anything." I laughed and said to him, "It's actually the opposite, we can't even cure a ham." The look he gave me was priceless.

I then gave him the 30 second explanation of chiropractic by asking him questions. Does the nervous system control every function in the body? Yes. If the nervous system is not working properly, will what ever organ or system the particular nerve goes to work properly? No. If we improve the function of the nervous system, can we improve the function of the body part the nerve goes to? Yes.

Since he answered all of my questions correctly, I said to him, "That's what chiropractic does." Chiropractic improves the function of the nervous system which then improves health. I then told him, "Chiropractors do not treat specific diseases or conditions, but chiropractic can help a person with any disease or condition if there is nervous system involvement. He looked at me like a light bulb just went on in his head. He then said, "I get it now. No wonder you guys think you can cure everything." Funny huh?

Not having chiropractic care in your life is like driving the car with the emergency brake on. It can be done and perhaps not even noticed, but once the brake is removed the car has more "energy" and performs better.

Parents take children to chiropractors for both general wellness care and specific health issues. Oregon chiropractor, Dr. Elise Hewitt's patient roster is exclusively pediatric; she provides care for problems including poor nursing, colic, constipation, reflux, poor sleep, asthma, chronic colds and sports injuries. She also sees children with neurological issues such as autism, attention deficit disorder and attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder. Issues such as an inability to nurse might seem unrelated to joints and muscles, she said. But if joints are locked up, that can irritate the nervous system, and if the nerve controlling a baby's tongue is irritated, the baby can't suck properly, she said. A chiropractor can go to the root of the problem and clear the blockage, she said.

Oregon chiropractor, Dr. Jeff Devine estimated that about 20 percent of the patients at his practice are children. He frequently sees them for falls or improper gaits, but parents also bring in kids for problems such as ear infections and for preventive care -- "to be adjusted and stay healthy."

Take a guess what is responsible for that wonderful pharmacy in our body? That's right. The nervous system. The nervous system regulates all the systems in the body that control body chemistry. If the nervous system is out of synch and nerve impulses to other systems are off, the body's chemistry,( its pharmacy) takes a hit and the body doesn't work as well as it should and can get sick. Guess what keeps your nervous system flowing the way it is supposed too? Right again. Chiropractic adjustments. Chiropractic can improve your body's health by improving function to you nervous system.

Tie a rope around a small chair. Now give the rope a solid pull. What happens to the chair? It moves with the pull of your rope. This is exactly how subluxations are caused in your spine. When muscles surrounding your spine contract or tighten up due to physical, emotional or chemical stress, the muscle exerts a force on the moveable spinal bone that the muscle is attached to. This force causes the bone to subluxate (misalign). The lucky people will get a pain or a symptom. Most of the time, the bone shifts out of alignment without a symptom. The longer the bone remains subluxated, the area becomes more unstable resulting in a worse problem. The reason I say the other people who get the symptoms fast are lucky is because they have the warning sign to get to the chiropractor and have the problem corrected quickly before it turns into a bigger problem affecting their health.

Not many people think of chiropractic as a life saving profession. In chiropractic, there is no emergency surgery, miracle antibiotic or even CPR. But, the bottom line is that chiropractic saves lives every day. Indirectly. When a spinal adjustment is given and a patient's health condition improves, that person does not need to take drugs or medication (for which there is a risk of getting sick or dying). When a chiropractic patient's health returns, that person does not have to go to the hospital and or have surgery (for which there is a risk of getting sick or dying). Therefore, chiropractic saves lives every day with every adjustment!!

In a discovery that demonstrates a clear link to the central nervous system and the body at a molecular level, scientists have shown that a chemical signal which normally allows nerve cells to communicate with each other also directly influence the intricate workings of the immune system.

~ Federation of the American Societies for Experimental Biology Journal, via Keith Wassung

As time goes on and science is better able to look at the inner workings of the human body, chiropractic will undoubtedly be proven to be the most effective and 100% natural way to maintain and preserve human health and lower the astronomical costs of health care.

Leading edge research in cellular and molecular biology is currently offering a radically new understanding of the mechanisms that “control” life and evolution. These new findings will inevitably integrate and unify the truths of both biomedical scientists and chiropractors. The uniqueness of chiropractic is that it has a vitalistic foundation. Leading edge cellular and molecular research is now proving that Chiropractic should embrace and promote its vitalistic roots. The chiropractic philosophy of D. D. Palmer provided an understanding of the principles employed in his healing art. Palmer declared that life’s vital functions were “controlled” by Innate Intelligence, which was under the guidance of an eternal Innate (spirit), since vitalism is at the heart of chiropractic philosophy, and vitalism is perceived as metaphysics, the philosophy of chiropractic is not recognized by conventional medical science.

Though modern medicine considers chiropractic as “unscientific,” it has not been able to ignore the large number of their patients that have been increasingly satisfied with chiropractic care. The success of chiropractic in recent years has fueled the antagonism between conventional medical physicians and chiropractors. Biomedical research scientists are at a loss to explain the efficacy of chiropractic adjustment for it is in direct opposition to contemporary knowledge concerning biological “control” mechanisms.

The safety pin cycle has been used to describe chiropractic since it's inception, developed by the profession's founder D.D. Palmer. It goes like this. Think of a safety pin, the top part being the brain. The brain sends it's mental impulses around the safety pin to the bottom part, the body. The body sends its nerve impulses back up the safety pin to the brain. This is how the body works. Messages are sent from the brain to the body and the body's responses are sent back to the brain. This communication network is responsible for every single function in the body. Now, pop open the safety pin.

This breaks apart the continuity of nerve flow. The messages from the brain to the body are now interrupted or interfered with and the brain / body communication is distorted. The result is malfunction to the body's organs and systems and this can result in ill health. When a vertebra in your spine is out of alignment, the vertebra puts pressure on the spinal nerve, interfering in nerve flow, disrupting the brain body communication. This is what chiropractors call a subluxation and can lead to decreased bodily function, performance and ill health.

My caring, sympathetic side is stronger than my fearful, selfish side. So, here goes. If you are sick, getting sick or recovering from sickness this is one of the best times to get adjusted ( I will risk myself for you! ).

The adjustment causes an immediate increase in whiteblood cells. These are the infection fighting cells that help the body fight off germs and viruses. The absolute best time to get adjusted is actually on a regular basis when you are NOT sick, as the regular adjustments boost the rate the body repairs DNA and increases resistance enyzmes in the body, both very important markers in maintaining a healthy, reactive immune system.

Pick a flower or piece of fruit off of a plant. Overtime, the flower or fruit will begin to wither and decay. Why is that? The answer is obvious. You separated the flower or fruit from its lifeline. The roots of the plant send life sustaining nutrients and energy to keep the flower and fruit alive. You have life sustaining energy that flows through you. It comes from your nervous system. And you, just like the plant, need this energy to be alive.

When your spinal bones are out of alignment, the misplaced bone causes a separation and disruption of the vital nerve energy in your lifeline. The result... a body that can not be or is not as healthy as it should be. The chiropractic adjustment makes sure that your energy flows and your lifeline is sustained. The result... a healthier you!!

Here are some important facts that the majority of the population are not aware of. Facts, that can in fact help you to be a healthier person and have a healthier family. Every time you have your spine adjusted by a chiropractor there is a positive affect on your immune system. When the thoracic spine in the middle back is adjusted, the release of nerve pressure causes a white blood cell production burst. White blood cells are the infection fighting cells of the body. An increase in production of these blood cells will cause your immune system to work better. In addition, with each adjustment of the spine, the body's rate of DNA repair is enhanced. DNA repair rate is an important factor in immune system function.

Over time, people under regular chiropractic care show serum blood levels that also reflect an increase in vital resistance enzymes. Resistance enzymes help the body to resist being overcome by germs and viruses. Regular spinal adjustments have been measured to boost immune system function as high as 200% greater than people who have never had their spine adjusted.

On the surface it sounds crazy, crack the back and you are healthier. But, what you have to realize is that the spinal bones are linked to the nervous system and the nervous system controls every single function in the body. Do you want a better chance to avoid the flu for yourself and your family? Get adjusted by the chiropractor regularly!!

Dr. Sidney Earl Williams, the beloved, colorful founder of Life University, died Thursday at his home in Powder Springs. He was 84. Williams, who had been recovering from a stroke he suffered in December 2011, died from complications of pneumonia. Affectionately known as “Dr. Sid,” or “Doc,” Williams was described as a giant in the chiropractic profession. “To me, he was bigger than life,” said Dr. Bobby Gise, who helped start Life University’s rugby program in 1980 as a student, and who now has a chiropractic practice in Jasper. A Thursday release from Life University said at a time when the chiropractic profession was facing criticism by opponents and a powerful medical lobby, Williams and a group of prominent chiropractors founded Life with a vision of educating skilled chiropractors. Under his leadership, Life University grew to be the largest chiropractic college in the world — a distinction it continues to hold. Williams is also credited with raising awareness, and increasing access to chiropractic care around the globe. He lobbied on behalf of the profession on a state and national level on matters relating to scope of practice and insurance regulations, never wavering in the face of criticism or pressure to compromise. “Dr. Sid Williams was one of the most influential chiropractors of his time,” said Life University President Guy Riekeman. “He was a leader, a visionary, and his presence is felt every day on the campus of Life University. He affected millions of lives, and his legacy will live forever.”

24 moveable bones in the spine. Vital nerves come out between the openings in the spine. If your spinal alignment is off, the nerves are messed with. Don't mess with the nerves!! The nerves are responsible for every function, performance and total health in the body. Everybody's body. Young and old. A periodic spinal adjustment keeps the nerves flowing and the body working the way it is supposed to do.

“90% of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated by the movement of the spine.”

~ Dr. Roger Sperry Quote

Did you ever see a barnacle? Barnacles are little see creatures, related to crabs and shrimp. They inhabit rough looking, pokey shells that attach themselves to pilings, rocks, docks and boat bottoms. They are jagged, little shells that look like volcanoes that jut off of structures they are attached to. Your prevent barnacles on boats by scrubbing, scraping and painting the boat bottom. Spinal bones can acquire their own little "barnacles." When the spinal bones have excess friction placed on them due to misalignment, boney outgrowths, like barnacles (called spurs) develop on the spinal bone. This is called degenerative joint disease or arthritis. Spinal adjustments reduce friction on the spinal joints and can prevent spurs and arthritis from developing.

So chiropractic care is a process that gives its greatest rewards over a lifetime and starts with your getting checked to see how much the subluxation process is interfering with your nerve system and your life. We automatically say, "Yeah, but I feel fine," however, symptoms are the last thing to show up in a process and therefore the worst possible way to judge your life's expression. We all know or have heard of someone who has dropped dead from a heart attack and never showed the smallest sign of that process, yet we know that cardiovascular disease is a process that occurs over decades. Diabetes is said to be at epidemic proportions mostly due to there being no obvious signs until the process has gone rampant for years. Or look at tooth decay, a process that occurs for years by the time you feel any pain or sensitivity. And haven't you heard of someone getting checked out and to their surprise they had a 99 percent blockage in their coronary arteries only to get immediate and drastic open heart surgery with basically no sign or symptoms before that?

Please understand that these things are just an example of processes that are a function of our fundamental disconnection with the understanding of life, health and being out of touch with our self. These disease processes are all low end on the spectrum and in reality are not what I am talking about when I speak of possibility. It is not enough to live just not to die, to be alive with no symptoms or to never need a surgery. I do not believe that is why god put us here on this planet.

~ Dr. Loyd Fielder

Tie a rope around your waist. Give the other end to a friend and have him or her pull on it. The odds are that the taught rope will move your body and pull you out of your standing still position. When a muscle undergoes stress or suffers an injury, the muscle tightens up and pulls taught. The spinal muscles are attached to your body's moveable spinal bones. When a spinal muscle goes taught from stress or injury, it pulls the spinal bone out of position causing a subluxated vertebra. You then get an ache or pain. Over time the muscle will adapt to the wrong position of the bone and there no longer will be pain. The area just becomes weaker and more unstable until your body is ready to give you a much bigger pain. Chiropractic adjustments correct the spinal bone position and relax the muscle tension.

Has your cellular phone ever lost reception while you were talking on it? The person on the other end sounds garbled and you hear a broken up converstation leading you to only hear part of the message. It is sort of the same thing when you have a subluxation in your spine. The out of alignment spinal bone interferes with the nerve impulses that are trying to send messages (a conversation) to the important parts of your body. If the nerve impulse message is garbled or "broken up," your body cannot function as it was intended to and the result is a loss of health.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away and if your spine is in line, your body will perform better and have a better chance at being healthier! And you thought I was going to say "fine."

Do not let the media scare you into a hypochondriac frenzy. Remember the "Bird Flu? If you do the things you are supposed to do concerning your body's health, viruses and bacteria will be less likely to overcome your body. Keep your immune system strong. Eat right, exercise, limit stress, sleep well, take your vitamins (expecially vitamin D3, extra C and anti-oxidants) and have your spine adjusted on a regular basis to remove nerve interference so that your immune system can function at its optimal level. All of the above advice is meant for not only you but children and adults of all ages.

When an automobile's wheels are out of alignment, the excess friction from the road onto the tires wears the tires down unevenly and prematurely. The same thing happens to the spine when the spinal bones are out of alignment. Excess friction placed on the bone above and the bone below from the spinal misalignment causes the bones to wear down unevenly and prematurely. We call this arthritis. Chiropractic care realigns the spine, reducing friction on the spinal bones. Having your wheel alignment checked on your car to prevent problems makes perfect sense. A periodic spinal check-up should make perfect sense too!!

The Flu Shot will be available in our office, effective immediately!! Not really, just kidding. But the spinal adjustment may be akin to the flu shot, research shows that regular chiropractic care boosts immune system T-cells, white blood cell production, serum thiol levels and resistance enzymes, all important factors in staying healthy and flu free!

Shock and Awe may be a term associated with war, but it also adequately describes how a person feels when something unexpectedly good happens following their chiropractic adjustments. For instance, it is shocking to a person to have a health complaint that is seemingly not related to the spine (such as headaches, digestive problems, ear issues, breathing difficulties or many other conditions) start to go away during their care. Shock then turns to awe, because it is awesome to be healthier. Take the time to learn how the nervous system, the spine and your health are tightly intertwined. Chiropractic can be a big player in your health care program.

A combined medical and chiropractic research project conducted by leading cardiologists and chiropractors found that patients with high blood pressure who also had an upper cervical subluxation of the C1-C2 vertebra, were able to lower their blood pressure naturally with chiropractic adjustments of the involved area.

Doctors of Chiropractic regularly care for people with sciatica. Sciatica is characterized by pain that originates in the low back or buttock that travels into one or both legs. Sciatic nerve pain varies in intensity and frequency: minimal, moderate, severe, and occasional, intermittent, frequent, or constant. Pain is described as dull, achy, sharp, toothache-like, pins and needles, or similar to electric shocks. Other symptoms associated with sciatica include burning, numbness, and tingling sensations. The purpose of chiropractic care is to help the body’s potential to heal itself. It is based on the scientific principle that restricted spinal movement leads to pain and reduced function and performance. Chiropractic care is non-invasive (non-surgical) and drug-free.

According to a recent survey for practicing chiropractors, those who maintain their health through regular and consistent chiropractic care generally enjoy more sleep, more exercise and fewer sick days than the rest of the population.

Chiropractic's health philosophy is very simple. Sometimes things are so simple, they are ignored by many. The nervous system controls the body and is responsible for the function, performance and health of every body part. The brain sends impulses through the spinal cord, out through the spinal nerves to the organs, tissues and cells. That is how the body works. Simple. If the spine is out of its proper and normal alignment, pressure on the spinal nerves can keep the body from functioning normally and being healthy. Chiropractors remove the nerve pressure so that the body can work better and be healthier. It is as simple as that.

Chiropractic care for older people may reduce deaths and injuries from falls according to researchers taking part in a study by Auckland University and the Chiropractic Research Centre (CRC) at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic on the neuro-physiological effects of chiropractic on the brain. `In the past ten years, researchers at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic have objectively demonstrated that chiropractic adjustments can change aspects of nervous system function including the way the brain controls muscles, responds to sensory stimuli and controls limb function which are all important when it comes to preventing falls.’

Chiropractic will help you poop!! From the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health, comes a study published on June 7, 2012 following the case of an infant with constipation being helped by chiropractic care. In this case, a 3 week old infant boy was brought to the chiropractor with a chief complaint of constipation. A chiropractic examination was performed which included visual inspection, static and motion palpation. A determination was made that the child had subluxations at both the top and bottom of his spine. The results as reported in the case study noted that the infants improvement was immediate. The authors wrote, "His mother was very excited to report that her child had a bowel movement on the day following his first chiropractic adjustment and following each feeding." The authors also recorded that, "The patient was also able to sleep longer during the night with less wake ups, crying, and general irritability."

How do you know when you are "done" with your chiropractic care? It all depends on what your goals are. Some people only want their pain to go away. Once the symptoms are resolved, then it is time for the case to be released. Others want spinal correction. This is the care that goes past symptom relief to make more lasting changes to the spinal alignment. Sort of like straightening teeth at the orthodontist's office. And lastly, some will use chiropractic for its health and wellness benefits and visit the chiropractor for periodic spinal check-ups to remove nerve stress, balance musculature and reduce degenerative friction on their spinal bones. These people will use chiropractic for the rest of their lives on a preventative basis. Remember the choice is always up to you. You don't have to go to the chiropractor the rest of your life, unless you choose too!

"We experience the world through our nervous system. At this very second, your body is executing billions (some say trillions) of functions that you don't even have to think about. In the time it took you to read that last sentence, billions of things happened inside of your body. Pretty amazing... right? We like to look at the nervous system in three distinct parts: the brain, the spinal cord and the nerves that run to every cell, tissue and organ in your body. Without these three integral parts of your nervous system, you could not survive. This is where "neural efficiency" comes into play. As a chiropractor, it is my job to find subluxations within the spinal bones and restore neural efficiency by adjusting that bone back into position. When we rid the spine of subluxations, we restore neural efficiency. With billions of messages being passed around your body each second, neural efficiency is vitally important."

~ Dr. Amy Spoelstra

Trey Hardee, 2012 Olympic Decathlon contender visits a chiropractor every other week to make sure that everything is in proper alignment. His primary motive is to make sure that there are no weak links in his body that might cause an injury.

Think of your spinal bones as tires on a car. If your car's wheel base is out of alignment, the excess friction on the tire from the road will cause the tire to wear down and erode. If your spinal bones are out of alignment the same thing happens. The misaligned vertebra cause excess friction on the bone above and the bone below. This friction leads to wear and tear, erosion and degeneration. All words that refer to the same condition...arthritis. Keeping your spine aligned properly reduces friction on the spinal joints and prevents arthritic changes that occur from wear and tear. This is a very important reason for seeing the chiropractor on a regular basis.

Conway, Arkansas chiropractor, Dr. Christine Hurley, provides monthly presentations on natural treatments for children at Hurley Chiropractic and Wellness Center. Dr. Hurley says that recent warnings from scientists and doctors about drug therapies in children have many parents seeking out alternative treatments. She and her fellow chiropractors at the center regularly treat children suffering from recurrent ear infections and the symptoms of ADHD, as well as infants with colic and children who suffer back pain from personal injuries. Dr. Hurley says chiropractic care has helped many children overcome personal injuries and common childhood ailments. "Keeping a child's spine aligned helps his or her nervous system work to heal infections and injuries naturally. This helps children who need rehabilitation from playground injuries, back pain, and other growing pains. We also successfully treat children who suffer ear infections over and over again, and children who struggle with ADHD. We use very precise, gentle, comfortable adjustments and the kids and their parents are very pleased with the results."

Today's amateur and professional golfers are turning to chiropractic care to help withstand the rigors and physical demands of the sport, as well as to improve performance. According to Dale Richardson, DC and a leading sports physician who has worked for the past 14 years full-time and exclusively on several prominent golf tours worldwide, “With proper care, athletes are able to enhance overall range of motion, stability, balance and endurance, and thereby remove any physical limitation, leaving the challenges of golf primarily psychological.” "For well over 20 years, professional golfers have relied on chiropractic care to help reach their full potential," says Dr. Richardson, who has worked with legendary players, including Nick Faldo and Padraig Harrington. "With proper care, athletes are able to enhance overall range of motion, stability, balance and endurance, and thereby remove any physical limitation, leaving the challenges of golf primarily psychological."

"The possibility for chiropractic care to help people with diabetes is an up and coming area of research, and it is an important one. Roughly one out of every three men and two out of every five women born in the year 2000 will suffer from diabetes in their lifetime. Research points to evidence that chiropractic care may make a valuable contribution to a wellness protocol that helps those diagnosed with diabetes. Diabetes is the fifth deadliest disease in the United States and a growing epidemic worldwide, so help is desperately needed! The average person may not recognize how diabetes and chiropractic are connected. What does the back have to do with blood sugar? Often, an electrician understands this faster than most people. Interfere with the current flowing through the wires and the appliances or areas of the house lose normal function or might even catch fire. If the nerve supply from the upper neck or middle back (the two areas that supply the pancreas) are disturbed, pancreatic function suffers; maybe in it's ability to produce enzymes to digest proteins, fats and carbohydrates, or maybe insulin production, or both. Blood sugar and digestion become unbalanced, resulting in either in diabetes or hypoglycemia."

Dr. Reggie Gold, one of the greatest chiropractic philosophers that ever lived, recently passed. His lectures, videos, and presentations demonstrate that he was a master of communication, he developed techniques to explain chiropractic to lay people with ease and beauty. A beacon of information to the world about the benefits of chiropractic, he worked diligently at debunking the misconceptions about chiropractors. His “Chemistry of Life” lecture helped thousands of chiropractors articulate that we are so much more than back doctors.

He explains, “Chiropractic deals with all the things that your body has to do, how you perform, how you drive, how you make a salad, how fast you can read and how well you can remember things.” Reggie was a powerhouse. His personal mission was to spread the chiropractic health care message to the world. He once said, "If you are not out to change the world, everything else is just 'Mickey Mouse'."

A recent case study published in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal and Family Health, found a marked improvement in the symptoms of 3 1/2 year old boy presenting with ADHD, a history of birth trauma and ear infections using chiropractic care to correct spinal nerve stress. After one month of care, parents and teachers reported a decrease in hyperactivity, and in increase in attention.

Chiropractic spinal adjustments, performed on a regular basis, reduce friction on the spinal joint. The adjustment puts motion into the spinal joint reducing joint friction. Spinal vertebral alignment correction should take place after any and all accidents that involve the neck and back. By correcting the alignment today, a reduction in degenerative changes from the accident will be the result. Preventative spinal adjustments maintain the health of the spinal joints helping to ensure a healthy spine well into old age.

The results of chiropractic care are different for every person, as each individual is unique. Many people find they have more energy, sleep better, have greater concentration and focus, are more productive, and have a greater ability to resist disease. Normal spinal motion is a requirement for normal brain and nervous system function, so improving spinal function has a positive effect on the human being as a whole. Chiropractic care is a good way to optimize your body's natural ability to adapt and heal.

Chiropractic is a holistic, drug-free, non-surgical method of treating conditions that are due to mechanical dysfunction of the joints and their effects on the nervous system by adjustments. Modern chiropractic is based on the 'one cause, one cure' theory outlined by Daniel David Palmer in 1895, who reportedly performed a spinal adjustment on a deaf janitor with a misaligned vertebra and restored his hearing, as well as his ability to stand up straight without pain.

Dr. J. Zimmerman was invited to speak to the Chiropractic Association of Ireland. The Irish government is in the process of legislating chiropractic practice. Dr. Zimmerman addressed the Irish association concerning the types of chiropractic practices in the United States and the possible path that chiropractic could take in Ireland. Zimmerman was brought to Ireland to help unite chiropractors in this important endeavor. According to CAI vice-president, Dr. Lawrence Woods, "Dr. J. Zimmerman's talk was a pivotal point in the history of the CAI and the future of the chiropractic in Ireland."

Warning, Deep Thought Attack: Life is a trinity, consisting of Intelligence, Force and Matter. The body's innate intelligence is always 100%. Force is what links the innate intelligence to matter (the physical body). The chiropractic definition of life is the expression of intelligence through matter. Practically speaking, life is the expression of nerve flow through the body, communicating the body's intelligence to its cells, tissues, organs and systems.

"In the near future, Chiropractic will be as much valued for its preventative qualities as it now is for adjusting and relieving the cause of ailments."

NFL Chiropractors, Dr. Michael Miller of the New England Patriots and Dr. Robert DeStefano of the New York Giants, explain that chiropractic is fundamental to the consequences of jarring impacts; they enhance body mechanics and joint motion while improving structural balance vital to preventing and addressing many common injuries. “Most of our players will get adjusted prior to games to adequately prepare their bodies for battle. Several times during the playoffs, incidents occurred that required chiropractic care and, subsequent to sideline treatment, players were able to return to action the following play. We expect to have the same efficiency going into and during the Super Bowl.”

Chiropractic care is a lifestyle choice. It fits into a health regimen the same as daily exercise, eating right and getting enough sleep. Once people realize that a healthy nervous system is responsible for every function in the body and that chiropractors keep the nervous system flowing as nature intended it to do, the world will be a healthier, happier place.

What would you say if someone told you that there are only two chiropractic techniques? It might surprise you, as by most estimates there are nearly 100. In fact, there certainly are many named techniques or methods of locating and correcting subluxations. Chiropractors need to have an arsenal of techniques up their sleeve if they are to be prepared for the many different health conditions that present to their office. Not to mention, that no two bodies are alike and each body may respond differently to a different technique. An old chiropractic mentor once said, never question the principle of chiropractic, question it's application. That being said, if results are lacking at one chiropractor's office, success may just as easily be found down the street (with a different technique). If a condition is not getting better, ask your chiropractor if he or she has another technique they could try. In my office, I have six different techniques that I am proficient at. Always keep the lines of communication open.

The average weight of the human head is between 9 and 12 pounds. This copious amount of weight is supported by seven little, moveable bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons. Any force, what-so-ever to the head, has a negative impact on the cervical spine. When the head is impacted by force, the neck muscles immediately and severely contract to protect the spine from severe injury. This sudden muscle contraction causes the spinal bones to misalign and change the shape of the spinal curvature. One of the most important things a person can do after suffering a head trauma (in addition to medical evaluation) and whiplash type injury is to see a chiropractor for evaluation of subluxation and spinal nerve stress.

“The world is indoctrinated in medicine. People are conceived and born in a medicine cabinet. They grow up in a drugstore. They have been brain-washed, hypnotized, mesmerized and drugged to believe that their health / life force comes from the outside-in.”

~ BJ Palmer, D.C., Developer of Chiropractic, quote taken from The Chiropractic Story by Marcus Bach 1949.

Can you imagine if Dr. Palmer was around today, to watch the television drug commercials?
Can you imagine what he would say?

“The basic principle, and the principles of chiropractic, which have been developed from it, are not new. They are as old as the vertebrae… I am not the first person to replace subluxated vertebra, for this art has been practiced for thousands of years. I feel it my bounden duty to not only replace displaced bones, but also (to) teach others, so that the physical and spiritual may enjoy health, happiness and the full fruition of our earthly lives.”

~ D.D. Palmer, the discoverer of chiropractic,1895

“Sleep will recruit rest, exercise will reduce laziness, spinal adjustments restore health. The prescription is good, but the masses do not heed it! Chiropractic is health insurance. Premiums small, dividends large.”

The spine and health are related in a fundamental way, and this relationship is mediated through the nervous system. Chiropractors examine the biomechanics, structure and function of the spine, along with its effects on the musculoskeletal and nervous systems and its role in health and disease.

"While other (healthcare) professions are concerned with changing the environment to suit the weakened body, chiropractic is concerned with strengthening the body to "suit" the environment."

Increases in health consciousness among baby boomers will boost demand for chiropractors. Over the five years from 2011 to 2016, forecasts predict that the chiropractic industry will grow to reach $14.8 billion, according to IBISWorld, the nation’s largest publisher of industry information. This number includes growth of 2.2% in 2012. Chiropractic is positioned to take advantage of newfound interest in complementary and alternative care, by providing more integrative care and gaining more consistent referrals from other healthcare professionals. The aging population also will continue to benefit from chiropractic care and healthcare reform will bolster demand.

Many families consider chiropractic care for children a routine and common practice. Dr. Gerald W. Clum, of the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress states, "Chiropractors and parents appreciate it as an important element of a healthy lifestyle and an orientation to wellness, in general. With adults or children, if the chiropractor finds restricted motion or other imbalances when palpating the spine or other joints, then a chiropractic adjustment is appropriate."

A study published in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine showed that people who used what the study called Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) received a “great deal” of benefit. Chiropractic was included in what this medical study defined as CAM care. The study surveyed people who had suffered from back pain and had used at least one CAM therapy in the last 12 months. Of these participants, the results showed that over 60 percent found remarkable relief using the top six CAM treat-ments. Those treatments were chiropractic care, massage, yoga / tai chi / qi Cong, acupuncture, herbal therapies and relaxation techniques – with chiropractic care being the most popular choice. Medical News Today reported, also, that back pain is the second leading reason people walk into a doctor’s office. Gerard Clum, Foundation for Chiropractic Progress spokesperson and president of Life Chiropractic College West noted: “What we are seeing with these studies is compelling evidence that there is a light at the end of the tunnel for back pain sufferers, and that light is chiropractic care and other CAM approaches.”

You cannot have true health if the nervous system is not functioning properly. The brain needs to send its messages to the body's organs and systems through the spinal cord and spinal nerves without interference. If the nerve flow is true, the body will work better and be healthier. This is the main virtue of chiropractic care.

~ Dr. J. Zimmerman, D.C.

The goal of the chiropractic adjustment is to correct the spinal subluxations detected during the examination. To do that, the doctor applies pressure to the bone and "unlocks" it from its improper position. The bone will then be free to align itself correctly. Many people think that the chiropractor forces a vertebra back into its "proper" place. But only the individual's own Innate Intelligence knows for sure what the proper place for each bone is. The role of the chiropractor is to free up the vertebrae. Then, the body can do its job and put them back in the correct position.

Chiropractic and Pregnancy. Because of the additional weight and stress on the framework of the body in pregnant women, chiropractic adjustments can help lower the incidence of pain in the low back and legs, and between the shoulder blades. In some cases, fewer headaches and problems with nausea and elimination may also result. Many chiropractors care for expectant mothers in the regular course of their daily practices. Most important is that chiropractic helps the expecting mother by improving nerve system function. For over 100 years Chiropractic has been based on correcting interference to the nervous system, known as subluxations. With a properly functioning nerve system free of subluxations it is easy to see how many aspects of this important time for an expectant mother will be made easier. Many women rely on chiropractic care as a regular part of their pre-natal routine.

Chiropractic is a philosophy of health care that concentrates on helping the body function the way it was designed. What do I mean by that? Consider how many times in your life you had to REMIND your body to breathe, pump blood or digest food. These functions of life happen automatically. Quite frankly, when the body works well, it works VERY well! However, the realities of life give us certain circumstances that interfere with the normal functioning of our bodies. Since the brain and nervous system control body functions, Chiropractic focuses on maintaining the health of your nerves, organs and connective tissue (muscles, tendons, and ligaments) so that the body can continue to operate normally. Emphasis is given to the body's ability to heal itself.

Chiropractic care can help headache sufferers. A recent study was performed that included a group of people who suffered with tension headaches. These headache sufferers were divided into two groups – those that underwent six weeks of chiropractic care and those that took traditional medication for the same six week period. At the conclusion of the study, both groups of patients had experienced noticeable improvements. However, it was duly noted that the patients who underwent chiropractic care treatment had far fewer side effects. Once the six week treatment concluded, those that underwent chiropractic care did not experience a return of their headache symptoms. Those that had taken traditional medication saw their symptoms return almost immediately.

Regular chiropractic care maintains the integrity of the spine and nervous system to help prevent health problems. Chiropractic can also be a successful alternative to risky, invasive procedures. Chiropractors work with the spine, not necessarily because it's the source of neck and back pain, but because it houses and protects the spinal cord and nervous system. Every vital life sustaining process depends on the integrity of this communication network between the brain and the body.

Problems with the lower extremities (feet, ankles, knees and hips) directly affect the function of the spine and pelvis. A popular saying in chiropractic is that structure affects function. If the structure is off, the body cannot work properly. When dealing with an altered gait (walking posture) from a foot, knee or hip problem, the spine easily goes out of alignment. This misalignment then negatively influences the spinal muscles and nerves that dictate how the body works. Over time, the misalignment can lead to muscular symptoms such as pain and/or nerve related malfunctions that can lead to ill health.

"Water consumption is also extremely important in helping chiropractors to correct spinal subluxations in their patients. Many patients with neurological symptoms and chronic muscle aches and pains will not hold their adjustment if they are dehydrated. Dehydration can prevent the body from healing properly. A simple test I use for dehydration is to simply ask the body if it is dehydrated using the occipital drop analysis. The analysis can even configure how many glasses of water are needed to free the body from dehydration."

Menstrual Problems Helped With Chiropractic. On May 23, 2011, a case study appeared in the scientific periodical, The Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health, documenting the case of a 21-year-old woman who had not had a menstrual cycle in 5 years and was helped by chiropractic care. In this case, a woman with a history of amenorrhea suffered from back pain and went to a chiropractor. Amenorrhea is described as an absence of a menstrual cycle for more than three months. The patient in this case started to have menstrual cycles at the early age of 7. Her medical doctor treated her with Lupron injections, a drug used to stop menstrual cycles and the onset of puberty. At the age of 9, her medical doctor discontinued the treatment, believing that the girl was old enough to start menstruation.

Upon seeking help for her back pain as an adult, a chiropractor performed an examination consisting of a postural evaluation, static and motion palpation, thermography and surface electromyography. The chiropractor determined that subluxations were present and initiated care, which consisted of regular specific adjustments to correct the subluxations. As care progressed, the woman reported experiencing better posture, more energy and an improvement in overall health.

Approximately 12 weeks into care, the patient reported the start of her menstrual cycle for the first time in 5 years. Further examinations continued to show improvement to the woman's overall health. She reported a loss in weight and the continuation of normal menstrual cycles. In their conclusion, the authors of the study discuss how subluxations can have a detrimental effect on body functions, including reproduction. They stated, "This case, as well as the reviewed literature, shows that chiropractic may play a beneficial role in reproductive health."

"The idea behind chiropractic therapy is that proper function of the musculoskeletal system allows the rest of the body, particularly the nervous system, to function properly as well. When this happens, the body is able to heal itself, fight disease, and maintain optimal health."

~ Sean Redman, D.V.M.

"Someone must teach new things, someone must take the abuse, someone must be ostracized, someone must be called a fraud and a quack. Then, out of it all comes a new truth to become part of us. Thus we receive new facts to make up our proud possession of knowledge."

"The purpose of an adjustment is NOT to depress, NOT to stimulate, but to remove interferences with the transmission, or pressures from the affected nerve, thus restoring normal nerve supply. The the inner wisdom of the body, with her exact knowledge, decreases or increases activities in the various organs or parts, as she finds necessary."

~ Carl S. Cleveland, Sr., D.C.

"Not having chiropractic care in your life is like driving the car with the emergency brake on. It can be done and perhaps not even noticed, but once the brake is removed the car has more "energy" and performs better."

~ Reggie Gold, D.C.

"268 miles per hour is the speed at which communication signals travel along the spinal cord, the fastest transmissions in the human body."

~ Valerie Ross

Chiropractic care reduces interference in the communication signals coming from the spinal cord through the spinal nerve, making sure that the communication between the brain and the body performs at an optimal level, maintaining health.

"Lung Function Improves With Chiropractic Care" is a study presented in the September, 1997 issue of the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research. The study found that patients who participated in the research project experienced "significant positive changes" in breathing capacity and lung function under chiropractic care. Of the participating patients, 55 were studied in a private office setting. Of the 55, 33 (60%) had lung function below the normal range. All of the patients were monitored with spirometers (instruments that measure lung capacity and function) before and after chiropractic care. While the average lung function of all 55 patients improved, the 33 whose breathing was most impaired had the greatest response to chiropractic care.

Chiropractors may be many things, but they are definitely not chickens. The philosophy of chiropractic goes against the grain of conventional society's idea of health. Each and everyday, chiropractors fight against medical opinion and pharmacuetical tyranny. Chiropractors stand their ground and fight an uphill battle for the principle of chiropractic, that the inner wisdom of the body directs, regulates and controls every bodily function and is responsible for health.

In a 1986 project at the University of Lund, in Lund, Sweden, researchers performed tests to gauge people's resistance to hazardous environmental chemicals. The researchers hypothesized that people with cancer would have a suppressed immune response to such a toxic burden, while healthy people and those receiving chiropractic care would have a relatively enhanced response. Measuring resistance enzymes in 107 individuals who had received long-term chiropractic care, the research produced surprising findings. The chiropractic patients had a 200% greater immune competence than those who had not received chiropractic care, and a 400% greater immune competence than those with cancer or other serious diseases.

Respected rheumatologist Dr. Frederick Wolfe points out that chiropractic treatment helps fibromyalgia patients. Dr. Wolfe is a well-known investigator of fibromyalgia, and is clinical professor, Department of Medicine, University of Kansas School of Medicine. In 1985, he and his colleagues interviewed 81 fibromyalgia patients and 81 control subjects using a structured questionnaire. Dr. Wolfe wrote, "In our current series, we asked patients to indicate if a drug or treatment had reduced their pain ... Of interest is that patients reported more benefit from 'life-style' modifications such as rest and relaxation than from other interventions. Chiropractic treatment also scored among the most effective measures".

"The Dr. OZ Show," hosted by cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz, , recently featured New York chiropractor Dr. Steve Shoshany. During a segment dedicated to chiropractic, Dr. Shoshany performed an adjustment on Dr. Oz's "assistant of the day." Dr. Shoshany, a graduate of Life University, explained to Dr. Oz and audience members that chiropractors attempt to find the root cause of pain, rather than trying to mask it with pain-relieving medication. Dr. Oz set up the chiropractic segment by emphasizing the prevalence of back pain in the general population and how many common daily activities can put the spine at risk for pain/injury. He also referenced the recent Cochrane study, February 2011, that suggests chiropractic adjustments are as effective as pain medication. Dr. Oz told viewers that chiropractic is a viable option for dealing with pain.

If chiropractic adjustments help the body regulate and disperse of methyl groups around genes, it would explain why it has such profound effects on so many different health issues. The brain signals the changes needed in the epigenome, and chiropractic helps that signal reach its destination without distortion or interference. Of course, much more neurological testing has to be conducted in order to test this hypothesis.

~ Terry Rondberg, D.C., President World Chiropractic Alliance

Most chiropractors' offices are equipped to care for patients with severe cases of osteoporosis. Gentle, low force adjusting instruments are extremely safe to spinal bones with low bone density levels. Soft tissue techniques used by chiropractors also offer relief from muscular related spinal problems. It is also important to remember the nervous system's role in the building of bone tissue. When the nervous system is working properly, the body performs better, including the manufacturing bone cells.

Chiropractic and bedwetting: “Chiropractic adjustments correct the misalignment which allows the nerve to carry information freely and completely between the bladder and the brain,” says Dr. Packard-Spicer. “If enuresis or bedwetting is an effect of the misalignment, the chiropractic adjustment can restore normal night-time dryness.”

The essence of the use of chiropractic care is that you don't need symptoms, you don't need pain, you don't even need to be sick. It's like walking into a room where the lights are on a dimmer and they are constantly set for 75%. Most people live their lives that way. Chiropractic makes sure that they are living their lives at 100%. Chiropractic care, by removing nerve interference, makes sure your life is "turned on" to its fullest potential and you can function at a level you may have never known was possible."

~ Armond Rossi, D.C.

"The fact that chiropractic focuses on nerve intervention makes it unique as a profession. If the nervous system is subluxated, is interfered with, and is not allowing the body to function at its highest potential, the person will never be as healthy as he or she was meant to be. That is the uniqueness of chiropractic."

~ Fabrio Mancini, D.C. President of Parker College of Chiropractic

A recent study shows that hamstring and lower limb muscle strain injuries can be dramatically reduced through the inclusion of a sports chiropractor in the traditional injury management programs adopted by sports teams which generally involve a mix of physiotherapy, massage and strength and conditioning management. "The study lasted an entire season and involved 59 players from two Australian Football League clubs," Dr. Wayne Hoskins, study author, said. "The group which included chiropractic management had a four per cent chance of a hamstring injury and a four per cent chance of a lower limb muscle strain. The group which received the traditional management had a 17 per cent chance of hamstring injury and a 28 per cent chance of a lower limb muscle strain."

Chiropractic care for children offers many benefits to enhance your family's lifestyle, health and vitality. The focus of chiropractic care is on the function of the nervous system and body. Through (the) nervous system, your child perceives the world, responds to stress, coordinates all body parts and functions, expresses emotions and creates conscious reality. Eighty percent of the nervous system develops by age 2, a time when the average toddler falls 38 times per day. Through spinal assessment and specialized testing, chiropractors can detect stored tension in your child's body and nervous system caused by physical, chemical and emotional stress. This stored tension can result in altered expression of life force, decreased vitality, poor posture, physical and/or emotional symptoms and disease. Using precise, artfully applied touches to the body, known as chiropractic adjustments, chiropractic care helps children release the stored tension and achieve optimum function and health. Giving birth might become an easier and safer experience through chiropractic techniques that are being researched by New Zealand specialists. "We are working with a number of pregnant women here in New Zealand; and the University of Australia in Sydney, which is also involved in the study, is testing hundreds of women," Dr Kruger said. "We are using state of the art 4D ultrasound to visualize the pelvic floor of women, pre and post chiropractic adjustments. We want to see whether spinal adjustments can alter the way the pelvic floor works. That way, their health professionals can work with them before birth and take special precautions once they are in hospital, to give them the best chance of having a safe, trouble-free birth." New Zealand Chiropractors' Association spokesman, Dr Simon Kelly, hoped the results would mean health professionals were able to offer pregnant women a greater level of preventive care and support.

A recent article published in January 2010 edition of the "Journal of Pediatrics, Maternal and Family Health," highlights how important a well adjusted spine is to the health and developement of young children and babies. The Journal reports the case study of a 2-week-old male patient who showed symptoms of colic, constipation and a troubled sleep pattern. In the case of this 2-week-old, the mother wanted to try chiropractic care. When the child was presented for his initial examination, he was crying and in distress. The examining chiropractor found the existence of subluxations in the child's spinal area. After the doctor performed the first adjustment, the infant had an immediate bowel movement and fell asleep. The patient underwent a regular program of chiropractic care, including spinal adjustments. After the fifth adjustment, the mother reported that the baby's bowel movements were becoming more regular. After a series of adjustments, the child was sleeping better and all symptoms of constipation and colic were resolved.

Irritation to a young person's nervous system can begin in utero. The baby's position during delivery (natural or cesarean) can create stress on the baby's nervous system. Even a "normal, healthy" birth can induce 40-50 pounds of pressure on a newborn's neck and spine. Dr. Carrie Getzmier, Chair of the Minnesota Chiropractic Association Communications Committee says, "Gentle chiropractic care not only removes this nerve interference, but also stimulates the immune system, enhancing the child's overall health." Dr. Getzmier explained that some of the symptoms parents should watch for include ear infections, colic, sleep disturbances, tilted head position, difficulty breast-feeding, reflux, and constipation or diarrhea. Any bumps and falls can also create joint dysfunction and nerve irritation to a young person during the developmental years. This may present as:

  • Headaches
  • Growing pains
  • Osgood-Schlatter's (Jumper's knee)
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Bed-wetting
  • Difficulty concentrating or staying focused
  • Stomach aches, heartburn, or indigestion
  • Skin Disorders
  • Asthma
  • Allergies

"If you want to maintain health and have your nervous system function at its best, while staying away from drugs and surgery, the solution is chiropractic care. This is a natural procedure of maintaining good health. The nervous system is the central processing unit of the body, which means that every action, reaction or function of the body is directed and observed by it. Therefore any problem created at this end can result into minor to major ailments. This is the reason why the chiropractic profession is becoming more and more popular, day by day."

Chiropractic Reduces Blood Pressure. According to the March 2nd, 2007, Journal of Human Hypertension, Chiropractic adjustments were better in lowering blood pressure than 2 medications combined! George Bakris M.D. said, “Not only does it work, we saw no side effects and no problems!” This was an 8 week study, where 25 patients who were receiving medication to treat early-stage high blood pressure were specifically adjusted. They significantly lowered their blood pressure compared to 25 similar patients who received sham or fake adjustments. Those patients who received specific chiropractic adjustments saw an average of 14mm Hg greater drop in the top number, and an average of 8mm Hg greater drop in the bottom number. George Bakris M.D. said, “when the statistician brought me the data, I actually didn’t believe it. It was way too good to be true.” The statistician said, “I didn’t believe it either, but we checked for everything and there it was.”

Q: Why would my child benefit from chiropractic care?

A: Simply put, children with properly aligned spines have a better opportunity to be healthy. Beginning at birth, children go through many different micro-traumas, (such as) frequent falls as they learn to crawl, walk and eventually run. Chiropractic adjustments give children an edge by reducing many physical stressors they endure throughout life.

The child’s spine is developing rapidly in the first 10 years of life. (Seemingly) innocent events, such as wearing backpacks, using the computer, having poor posture and getting injured playing sports, can create spinal subluxations (misalignments) in the child’s spine. Subluxations can put pressure on the child’s nervous system. When the nerve isn’t functioning correctly, it can result in symptoms related to organs, muscles and various systems of the body. Symptoms such as colic, asthma, ear infections, stomach ache, bed wetting, poor posture, hyperactivity and frequent colds or flu might be evidence of subluxations.

Through safe and gentle adjustments, a chiropractor can realign the child’s spine with specific contacts, reducing the pressure on the nervous system, allowing the body to heal and reduce symptoms. Like dentistry, many parents also see the benefits of providing preventive care for their children and see this as an important role in their child’s overall health and wellness.

~ Dr. Jeff Ludwick, PennLive.com

"Chiropractic is not a natural cure for any condition or disease. That's not what this is about at all. We, as chiropractors, are not treating; we are enhancing normal body function by removing spinal nerve interference. It's not just a play on words, (where we come from) is a completely different base... That's what makes the difference."

~ Jeanne Ohm, D.C. Editor and Chief, Pathways magazine

"You needn't be sick to benefit from chiropractic care. All you must have is a desire to express your life to its fullest potential, and if you have that desire, the chiropractor can assist you by identifying and correcting areas of interference."

~ Christopher Kent, D.C., FCCI, J.D.

What came first, the chicken or the egg? In relation to the spine: What happens first, the spinal bone misaligning or the muscle straining? A very common question to the chiropractor is whether the bone is out of place or whether it is just a muscle pull. The answer is, one can't happen without the other. First, the back or neck muscles undergo an unusual amount of stress (such as a strain). Since the spinal muscles are attached to moveable spinal bones, the muscle exerts a force on spinal joint and "pulls" the bone out of its proper alignment. Once the spinal joint is misaligned, the muscle stays stretched and irritated. The only way to get the muscle to correct itself is to realign the spinal joint. Treating the symptom with ice, heat, electric muscle stimulation and massage will only temporarily relax the muscle tissue. As long as the spinal bone is out of alignment, the muscle will stay in a state of imbalance. Thus the purpose of chiropractic, to adjust the spine, balance the musculature and correct the condition.

The brain sends mental impulses down the spinal cord and out through the spinal nerves to all of the body's systems, organs, tissues and cells. This is how the body (including the heart!!) works, functions and lives. If there is a disturbance, disruption or interference in the brain's mental impulse and nerve flow, the body cannot be as healthy as it was meant to be. Chiropractic removes nerve flow disruption along the spine. It improves the brain's communication network, thereby improving bodily function, performance and health!

Since I have already mentioned the term "Silent Killer," did you know that the chiropractic profession has used that term as well? Misaligned vertebrae (called subluxations) have often been referred to as a "silent killers." The majority of subluxations that exist in our bodies' spinal columns, exist without causing symptoms (pain). A misaligned vertebra places pressure on vital nerves that come from the spine, and the subluxation interferes with nerve flow. Nerve interference causes a decrease in function to all of the systems, cells and tissues in the body. Overtime, the interference leads to a decrease in bodily function, performance and health. As with blood pressure, the only way to know if you have subluxations is to be checked, in this case, by a chiropractor. A chiropractor will re-adjust out-of-place vertebra by a using a simple, pain-free technique. When the vertebrae are properly in place, your nerve flow will be at its fullest capacity.

"I'm always astonished by how little is needed for an adjustment on babies and children, and how incredibly they respond physiologically. My greatest miracles in practice - some of them have been truly life-saving, a matter of life or death - were with babies. The parents knew very clearly that if those babies had not been adjusted, they would have died. Their medical situation was very complex and documented (by) some of the best children's hospitals in Pennsylvania. Then came the chiropractic adjustment and their entire physiology shifted, and that child lived. So, that to me has always been the bewildering factor about chiropractic."

~ Arno Burnier, D.C.

"Many think that health is merely the absence of pain or symptoms. A wellness approach to health means adopting a variety of healthy habits for optimum function on all levels - physical, mental, social, and spiritual. Because of its focus on the nervous system, chiropractic care can be an important part of a wellness lifestyle. The nervous system controls the function of virtually every aspect of our lives. So, maintaining a properly functioning nerve system is essential if you want to be your very best."

"Doctors of chiropractic play an important role in helping Olympic athletes prepare for competition and recover from injuries. Their visibility on the U.S. Olympic Committee's (USOC) medical staff has increased steadily over the years. We're taking five chiropractors [to the Olympic Games this year] and that just shows how far chiropractic has come since the first chiropractor joined the Olympic medical staff in 1980," says Dr. Michael Reed, a doctor of chiropractic who serves as a USOC medical director. "It has a lot to do with the requests of the athletes - they recognize the benefits of chiropractic in helping their bodies perform at peak condition."

People have counted on chiropractic adjustments for years. A few cracks of the spine can make a world of difference, but according to Dr. Patricia Cline of the Cline Chiropractic Center, those adjustments can have some long-term benefits many folks may not realize. "You're going to have better resistance to colds and flu," she says. "You're going to feel more rested and may even sleep better."

"This is the time of year that headache complaints are on the rise. Colder weather, busier end-of-year schedules, holiday stress (and) over-indulgence in caloric foods and alcohol are just a few of the reasons that headaches are increasingly more common. If you have chronic headaches that won’t go away, call your chiropractor. More than ever, patients are finding relief in chiropractors’ offices for chronic headache pain. Tension, sinus and even migraine headaches usually respond to a series of chiropractic treatments."

"Chiropractors will never be as busy as they could and should be until people lose faith in the unscientific religion of modern medicine."

~ Robert Mendelsohn, MD

Forget back pain and neck pain for a moment. Move symptomatic relief from aches and pains out of your mind. The most important aspect of chiropractic care is that spinal adjustments open up the nerve channels between the spinal bones, allowing the brain to effectively send its messages down the spinal cord and out through the spinal nerves. When the nervous system is flowing properly, the body works better, the body performs better, the body is healthier!

"Spinal misalignments (subluxations) can often flow into pain sensitive structures in the head and neck. Chiropractic spinal adjustments are important to restore normal spinal alignment and eliminate and/or reduce the irritations that can cause headaches. Misaligned vertebrae can affect the spinal nerves, muscles, and blood supply to your head."

~ Daily Observer, Pembroke, Canada

"The body's ability to function properly is based on the integrity of the nervous system. Chiropractic care can maintain a spinal column relatively free of nerve interference and thus enhance the body's innate ability to restore and maintain health."

~ Fred Barge, DC, PhC

"One of our biggest challenges is not the small percentage of people who don't go to a chiropractor, or those who do, it's the vast majority of people that have no idea who we are or what we are about," says Dr. Sigmund Miller, a chiropractor of 35 years who serves as executive director of the Association of New Jersey Chiropractors.

That's because people don't view chiropractic as a continual vessel for health and well being. They only see it as something that's necessary when the back is out of wack.

"We're primarily focused on caring for patients, adjusting the spine and improving quality of life," Miller says.
