Health Tip of the Week: Ultra-processed Foods

Ultra-processed foods are foods and beverages that have 5 or more industrial formulations in their manufacturing.  Industrial formulations are a mixture of chemicals that do not chemically react.  Common industrial formulations are not just used in food manufacturing.

They are also the foundation of other products we use daily like:

  • Paint
  • Medicine
  • Sunscreen
  • Fuel
  • Cleaning agents
  • Fertilizers

To give an example of ultra-processed food using 5 or more industrial formulations I offer you the following list:

  • Ice cream
  • Candy
  • Cake
  • Cake mixes
  • Cookies
  • Fruit drinks
  • Cocoa drinks
  • Energy drinks
  • Ready to heat products
  • Mass produced bread and buns
  • Chocolate
  • Pastries
  • Breakfast cereals
  • Fruit yogurt
  • Energy bars
  • Infant formulas
  • Instant sauces
  • Powdered or packaged soups
  • Margarine

Ultra-processed foods are linked to obesity, heart disease, diabetes and cancer.  These types of foods increase the overall mortality rate.

Statistics from a National Health and Nutrition Examination survey in 2010 found that the average American gets 57.9% of their energy calories from ultra-processed food and 89.7% of their energy calories from sugar.

Recently a television reporter from the BBC went on a 80% ultra-processed food diet for 4 weeks. In that time frame he gained 15.4 lbs, lost sleep, became anxious, decreased libido and felt “10 years” older.

Brain scans showed that after 4 weeks of this poor diet, his brain created links similar to those addicted to drugs and alcohol, making him crave these types of foods.  Doctors estimate that is he would have continued the diet for 6 months he would have gained 84 lbs.

This shows you the importance of a whole foods diet for health and longevity. Americans should strive for 90% whole foods diet and 10% processed food for optimal health.

Covid-19 Update

The new delta variant will be the primary covid-19 virus in the USA in about 2 weeks according to Dr. Fauci.  This virus variant has a much higher spread rate.  In the coming weeks, it is vitally important that you place an emphasis on good health practices to boost immune system function.

Most people who contract covid-19 recover without incident, but those whose immune systems are not up to par will suffer moderate to severe cases.

Pay attention to whole foods, vitamins (especially D3, zinc, C, quercitin etc), get regular exercise, sleep enough hours, limit stress, see your chiropractor, acupuncturist and massage therapist for an added immune system boost.

According to testing results the virus has affected 33.6 million people in the USA. 152 million people have been fully vaccinated.  If you add the two numbers together, we are almost at the 200 million mark for people who have covid-19 antibodies.  Doctors say it will take that amount to reach herd immunity, which is a very good sign.

On May 11th, we had 36,000 new covid-19 cases in the USA, the total case number has been dropping all month, with a total of 12,781 new cases on June 25th.  Daily deaths in the same period have dropped from 693 on May 11th to 398 on June 23rd.

As per CDC website, the death rate percentage for age 65 and over is 79.5%.  For age 45-64 the rate is 17.7% and under age 45 the death rate is 2.5%.  The most commonly listed co-morbidities at the time of death are the flu and pneumonia 46.1%, high blood pressure 19.7%, diabetes 16%, Alzheimers and dementia 13.2% and sepsis at 9.6%.

Covid-19 Vaccine Update for 12-17 Year Olds

As per CDC website adverse reporting system, there have been over 11,000 reported adverse reactions in this age group.

578 were serious enough for hospitalization and 9 deaths occurred. There were 237 reports of myocarditis.

The World Health Organization is now recommending that children in this  age group should not be vaccinated at this time as more information on the vaccine is needed.

In an interview on Fox News, Dr. Robert Malone, the inventor of the mRNA vaccine technology used for the covid-19 vaccine stated he has vaccine safety concerns and is troubled about the lack of transparency of vaccine side effects.

Prenatal, Pregnancy and Chiropractic Care

Prenatal chiropractic care utilizes pelvic alignment and soft tissue pressure points to help make pregnancy a comfortable experience for the mother-to-be.  Pregnant women under chiropractic care report less discomfort, more energy and a greater feeling of well-being when compared to previous pregnancies without chiropractic care.
